Intentional Communication

Intentional Communication

Hello! I’m Kay, darling. 22. I’m a writer, a weirdo, an emotional, sentient being in search of purpose and joy. Sagittarius rising/ Leo sun/ Virgo moon. I love talking to plants, listening to the stars, dancing to live music, and expressing through intentional communication.

I grew up in the United States—moving from Michigan to South Carolina with my family, and then alone I attempted to find a home in Massachusetts to California to New York to Washington DC, but now I’ve finally given up and moved to Berlin. I’m already feeling my spirit connect to this place more so than anywhere in the states, so I think I made the right choice.

What inspired you to become a model?

I’ve wanted to model ever since I was little. My sisters and I would watch Tyra Banks on America’s Next Top Model, and I wished on every birthday to be able to try it out one day. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’m pursuing this for my (extremely) awkward eight-year-old self. Modelling has come in and out of my life in small bursts ever since I grew into this lanky body of mine, but this is the first time I’m committing myself to exploring the industry.

What do you study/want to study or What other jobs do you have apart from modelling?

I studied environmental analysis and agricultural politics in school—analyzing the needs of the planet as well as systemic oppression under capitalism through the lens of food. No jobs outside of modeling at the moment, but I’ve done a lot of advocacy and non-profit work in the past surrounding environmentalism, food justice, gender rights, prison abolition, and anti-sexual violence.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Quitting my job and moving to Berlin to model isn’t too far down the list…but there was also the short amount of time I left college to be an au pair in Paris.

If you had to teach a subject, what would it be?
Either history or health. Both have such huge impacts on development and societal understanding! Though the teachers who’ve had the greatest impact on my life taught literature.

Favourite city or place in the world and why?

I was able to participate in a literature program at Oxford during my senior year of high school, and I fell absolutely in love—even while writing about the oh-so-tortured T.S. Eliot. In the future, I look forward to getting my graduate degree there!

Do you tend to take on leadership roles in social situations?

Definitely! I’ve got a good head on my shoulders, and I love to make informed decisions. Also I find it rewarding to make other people feel warm and comfortable, so taking the lead in social situations is an easy way to go about that.

What futuristic thing do you wish your clothing or accessories could do?

It would be so fun if they could convey our moods. I am such an open book, and I wish everyone else would be too.

Which historical figure would you most like to be?

The only, of the few, woman in history I could possibly imagine being is Cleopatra.

The most important thing you learned from your parents?
My mom instilled a lot of self-respect in me, which has been invaluable! I am capable enough to handle anything, and I’ve known that for as long as I can remember.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
At the top of my modeling career, DJing on the side, with a book and a TED talk under my belt, traveling the world, with a lovely friend and animal-filled countryside farm as a home base. Maybe that’s 10 years from now, but we’re aiming high.

Thank you for the talk Kay, good luck in life and the industry!
